Typhon Treatment Systems Ltd. is a UK registered water treatment equipment manufacturing company formed in 2014 to develop ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diode (LED) water treatment technology. At this time we focus on two applications:

  • biological disinfection for inactivation of pathogens
  • photochemical oxidation processes for removal of chemical water contaminants

Typhon's equipment is designed to treat large volumes of water, and all of the innovative design features of this configuration can be applied to smaller systems, including residential flow rates. While we can make personal use and residential tap water systems, the basis of our development is utility-scale applications.

In less than three years the power of commercially available disinfection-range UV LEDs has more than quadrupled. Typhon's patent-pending design enables our equipment to deliver an unequaled UV dose to the treated water. As UV LED output power and energy efficiency increase by leaps and bounds, Typhon will continue to develop our unique UV LED water treatment solutions.

In 2013 Typhon’s founders, Dr. Matthew Simpson and Peter McNulty were working together on an off-grid municipal scale water project in Nigeria. The need for electrical efficiency and simplicity of operation inspired them to investigate the possibility of using high flow LED ultraviolet (UV) water treatment equipment. None existed, and no existing UV water treatment equipment supplier would build one for them. In 2014 Typhon Treatment Systems was formed to create it.

Dr. Matthew Simpson obtained his PhD from the University of Newcastle, and has more than 15 years of experience in civil and environmental engineering. Dr. Simpson co-founded EPD UK, a specialist engineering consultancy that went from concept to the international market place in three years.

Peter McNulty is an entrepreneurial senior executive with more than 25 years of experience in growing environmental engineering enterprises. Mr. McNulty founded N.E.I. Treatment Systems in 1997, and managed all aspects of its growth and transformation from a sole consultancy into a global marine equipment manufacturing company.

Innovus Technology Investment Fund

Innovus is a UK government grant funding organization focused on fostering the development of new technology, jobs, and industry in the Northwest of England. Through Proof of Concept and Prototype Development grants Typhon has been the recipient of more than £300,000 ($450,000) of matched funding from Innovus. Their support has been critical to the progress Typhon has made thus far.


Nikkiso Co. Ltd. is a Japanese industrial conglomerate that is the world's leading manufacturer of UV LEDs for disinfection. Nikkiso America, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nikkiso Co. Ltd. owns 25 percent of Typhon's outstanding stock. The President of Nikkiso America serves on Typhon's Board of Directors.

Cranfield University

Since 2014, Typhon has been privileged to have a strong working relationship with Cranfield University's Water Science Institute. Scientific research into our biological and photochemical product development has been conducted there. Typhon sponsored an MSc student in 2016, and will sponsor at least one PhD student in 2017. We look forward to continuing this partnership for many years.

United Utilities

United Utilities is the water and wastewater utility for the Northwest of England, extending from the cities of Liverpool and Manchester up to the Scottish border. Their 94 drinking water treatment, and 569 wastewater treatment works serve approximately 7 million customers in the region. Typhon's office is located in United Utilities' service area. We are pleased to have a growing relationship with United Utilities for on-site prototype testing and development of our technologies.
